Alfresco cooking and dining can be a bit of a minefield for vegetarians. First off, does the host know you're vegetarian? Should you bring something? Will they cook your food separately to the meat? Even worse, should you say something if it isn't? We've seen the word 'barbecue' bring veggies out in cold sweats but it needn't be so difficult.
Our advice is to invite your friends round for a vegetarian or vegan bbq instead. You'll be taking the chance to let everyone know your dietary requirements early on in the summer and you can also show them all the great vegetarian bbq recipes you found at cookveg.co.uk! Who knows? Next time they host a barbecue, you might find yourself with something a little more interesting than a roll and some salad...
Cheap Vegetarian Recipes
When it comes to cost-per-serving, vegetarians (and vegans even more so) definitely have the edge. It's so easy to throw together a vegetarian dinner party too – start with a soup or tartlet (both are so easy to prepare and can be made in advance), then go for a one-pot main served with salad and a super easy dessert to finish. If you repeat some of the same ingredients, not only will it come across as a cohesive and well-thought out menu, but you'll save even more money too! Plus, we have oodles of cheap vegetarian recipes to choose from. Why not pick something in season? After all, seasonal vegetables are likely to be on offer at your local supermarket...
Dinner Parties
If money is no object, we say go for it and use your next dinner party as a shop window for vegetarianism. Try and win over as many of your sceptical friends as possible with platefuls of pure veggie indulgence. Don't bother trawling through your dusty and splattered cookbooks whose pages stick together at your favourite recipes. Simply power up your computer and relax with a cup of tea while choosing which simple and cheap vegetarian meals or indeed, which over-the-top meat-free spreads you'll try your hand at next.
Party Food
If you ever go to a party where everyone's expected to chip in and help, you might find that as 'the vegetarian' you're asked to provide the meat-free canapés. Cue the palpitations and sleepless nights... Fear not though! Vegetarian party food is easy to make and serve, whether you make your own pork-free sausage rolls with our Mock Sausage Rolls recipe (perfect served alongside an onion chutney) or for fuss-free entertaining food, choose from one (or more) of our bruschetta recipes. They're so easy – simply slice your bread, toast and rub with garlic before letting guests pick and choose their favourite toppings to load. Let's face it, the less cooking you do on the night, the more time you'll have to enjoy the evening and isn't that what parties are really all about?
